Stage 1: Travemünde - Hamburg, 83km
My virtual cycle tour from Travemünde to Girona commenced today on the 1st of May, 2020. Today's stage was not too long, only 83 km, from Travemünde to Hamburg. Easy ride, although strong crosswinds would have made it easy to break a peloton into echelons, but there was no peloton, only me, cursing the wind.
After riding out of the ferry, I headed straight towards Lübeck, as I wanted to see the famous marzipan shops with the marzipan houses and buy some marzipan bars for the ride. Lübeck is a famous Hanseatic old town with some nice churches and other old buildings. I am not quite sure whether they are really old ones or merely reconstructions after the war.
From Lübeck, I took some quite small side roads, with some real countryside view and feeling. There were cows and other farm
animals. In Lütjensee I stopped for coffee and some sandwiches at Zingelman's bäckerei. Really refreshing.
Then it was not a long ride to Hamburg anymore. I arrived well in time to my hotel, the Fürst Bismark opposite the main railways station, the famous Hauptbahnhof, one of my favourite stations in the world. Almost a holy place for anyone travelling by train.
After checking in the hotel, I had delicious fish soup in Nagel, an old Bierstube, with some dark beer. Then it was time to rest for a few hours. Maybe I have time for beer or two later in the evening?
