Stage 10: Darmstadt to Heppenheim, 30km
My virtual bicycle tour to Girona continues. Today, a very short ride, only 31 kilometers from Darmstadt to Heppenheim. I did not feel that great, frankly I was quite bored with cycling, so I took a look at the map and Google and chose to ride to the most charming little town within 40 kilometers. Heppenheim was the undisputed winner, such a splendid town next to a small mountain range, and with no climbing required.
Heppenheim is s the seat of Bergstraße district in Hesse, Germany, lying on the Bergstraße on the edge of the Odenwald. Lovely, with yet another splendid collection of Fachwerkhäuser.
I followed more or less closely the Bergstrasse. From Wikipedia I read in the morning that
Rather beautiful. It is always interesting to follow Roman roads. Once, in Girona, I even lived in street which used to be a Roman road. And Damascus, we walked down the Straight Street, which is mentioned in the Bible. So, Roman roads whenever possible.
In Heppenheim, I found a room in the Hotel-Restaurant Goldener Engel. Lovely house, with restaurant serving me hearty German food.
Tomorrow, I hope my legs will be strong again. I would like to cycle more than 80km.

The Bergstraße passes through three rural districts and two urban districts: Darmstadt, Landkreis Darmstadt-Dieburg, Kreis Bergstraße, Heidelberg and the Rhein-Neckar-Kreis. The northern part belongs to Hesse and the southern part to Baden. The border between these two Länder is between Heppenheim and Laudenbach.
The Bergstraße was used as a trading route as far back as Roman times. The name bergstrasen was first recorded in 1165. A Latinised form of the name (strata montana) did not arise from the Romans but during the Renaissance. Older names are: strata publica (795), platea montium (819) and montana platea (1002).
