Viileä aamu Toursissa
26.5.2022, torstai · Tours → Châtellerault
Huomenta Toursista! Sää on täällä mukavan viileä. Nyt aamulla lämpötila on 13C. Illaksi luvataan 21 asteen mukavaa pyöräilysäätä. Tosin aion kyllä ennen iltaa olla perillä.
En ole aivan varma mihin pyöräilen tänään. Jatkan Eurovelo 3:a pitkin kohti Santiago de Compostelaa. Matkan varrella seuraava suurempi kaupunki on Châtellerault, jonne on noin 87km. Sitä seuraava, kuuluisampi ja isompi, olisi Poitiers noin 120km matkan päässä.
Matkan pituuden lisäksi on otettav huomioon hotellihuoneiden saatavuus. Eilen illalla yllätyin etsiessäni vapaita huoneita Booking.com:sta. Poitiersissa oli yksi, lähempänä muutama. Ovatko hotellit kiinni helatorstain vuoksi vai ovatko paikalliset ottaneet perjantain töistä vapaaksi ja lähteneet matkoille? Tiedä häntä.
Minulla on nyt varattuna huone Châtelleraultin Ibis-hotellista. Googlen mukaan kaupungissa on muissakin hotelleissa vapaita huoneita. Käyn tsekkaamassa ne paikan päällä.
Eilen kävi ensimmäistä kertaa niin, ettei hotelli suostunut ottamaan pyörääni sisätiloihin. Olisi pitänyt jättää fillari kadulle - eikö kadulla ollut mitään mihin pyörän olisi voinut lukita. Outoa. Vaihdoin hotellia.
Rennosti vaan. Parin edellisen päivän pitkät polkaisut väsyttävät.

Today I rode from Tours to Chatelleraut. I was lucky to have reserved a room in an Ibis hotel yesterday. Due to Ascension day, all hotels are fully booked. Not a single vacancy in this town or in the next town.
Ride here was rather uneventful. I was really tired in the morning and wondered whether I will make it to Chatelleraut. But once I jumped on bike, my legs said “everything is going to be ok, just take it easy”. So I did. There was no wind and no long ascents.
Half way in I stopped for a coffee. I would have liked a croissant or something, but the bar cafeteria only sold coffee, alcohol and cigarettes. I think most French people do not need anything else. The other explanation is that they are too poor to have lunch in cafes.
Now I am off to McDonalds. It is the only place to get anything to eat around here.

Greg LeMond, one of the greatest cyclists ever, famously said: “It never gets easier, you just go faster”.
When applied to training and racing, LeMond got it right. When one gets any better, one just trains and races at a bit higher level.
When it comes to bicycle touring, I would say LeMond might and should be wrong. One gets fitter, of course, by cycling 4-6 hours a day 5 days a week, or even more.
But being fitter also gives one an opportunity to take (at least) some days easier. One can deliberately ride slow, much slower than one could, that is way below the aerobic threshold.
Tomorrow, I will ride and I try my best to ride slowly.
