Saapuminen Santiago de Compostelaan

Some videos from yesterday. Maybe they capture some of the emotions I and other pilgrims experienced when arriving to Santiago de Compostela.

Aina on helpompia reittejä.
Määränpääni oli aluksi Lissabon, jonne halusin päästä omin voimin ilman moottoreiden apua. Jossain vaiheessa Santiago muuttui määränpääkseni. Nyt sen saavutettuani olen rentoutunut. Ihana fiilis.
Matkani jatkuu tänään Pontevedraan 60km täältä etelään. Siellä on kuulemma pantu autot kuriin ja rauhoittu laaja alue autoilta. Kuulemma liikennekuolemat loppuneet, päästöt romahtaneet, turismi kukoistaa ja liiketoiminta kannattaa. Tarkempi raportti Pontevedrasta illalla.

An easy ride from Santiago de Compostela to Pontevedra. Nothing special or peculiar took place. My route was composed by Komoot, thus I found myself in a bush looking at half meter wide path. That was enough, I decide to ride the N-550 highway. It was easy, no need to look at the map. Some heavy traffic but even trucks waited behind me if they could not obey the 1,5m mandatory overtaking distance. Uphill or downhill, everywhere.
Pontevedra has its car free zone, pedestrian center. Based on my short ride to the very center, I would say this is a pleasant city. Outside center, just like any other Spanish city: full of cars.
My hotel has a restaurant. They have very delicious lunch menu...

Pontevedra has banished cars from its old town and city center. Where cars used to roam, park and pollute, plus kill people, there are now bars, restaurants, trees, terraces, and people.
Kind of funny how hard it to imagine how these places were with car traffic. Absolutely insane idea to have cars instead of people, entertainment, commerce. Car do not spend money, people do. When people arrive by cars, they do not stop to shop, or not many as cars take up all space.
During my journey I have seen car free walking areas in many towns: Paris, Nijmegen, Tours, Orleans, Bordeaux, Donostia, Burgos, Leon, Ponferrada, Santiago and here. All full of people, happiness, social interaction.
I think building societies around the need of cars is the biggest mistake humans have ever made. We can fix cities, but it takes political will and courage.
