To reserve or not?
A piece of advice for first time interrail adventurers. Unless you are travelling during the peak season, there is really no need to book everything months in advance. Dinner in Bari
The whole point of interrail ticket is flexibility. You can change your plans according to weather, strikes, mood, price of accommodation or whatever. Booking everything months in advance is like building a delicate house of cards. Collapse is imminent. For most destinations there are several routes and several trains daily.
For example, I am now travelling in Southern Italy with a three months continuous interrail ticket. I took trains along the Stockholm - Copenhagen - Hamburg - Strasbourg - Milan - Rome - Foggia - Bari route.
I booked tickets to Hamburg in advance, but the trains were not full, so it was not really necessary. I have booked other trains less than 18 hours before without any problems. Accommodation is aplenty and cheap everywhere outside peak season.
But one cannot book a seat in a train which has already began its journey even if you want to get abroad along its route. So, maybe it is good to book few hours before the train leaves.
Anyway, if you have questions, I am pleased to try to answer them.
