My experiences form MIT's AI and Health Care online course:

1. The course had 6 modules, each of which had some 6-8 short videos, selected reading, discussion fora, and some exercises

2 . Most videos had just a professor speaking, surprisingly slowly for MIT / Boston area. Not too much graphics, examples, just a talking head.

3. Transcripts of videos were available, so after few modules I just read them, it is way faster and keeps me focused.

4. The topics and examples (more about them later) were interesting as such.

5. Some topics, and videos, were a few years old, which is for me surprising, given that the course was not free. And given the pace of AI development.

6. The exercises were easy to complete, did not take much time.

7. The discussion fora (there were on for the whole course and one for each module) were useful, but for some reason I did not participate too much, I found that my way of writing is way too condensed for American forums. I do not remember having this problem in MIT, there talking and writing succinctly was valued highly.

8. I leaned a lot, but maybe not as much as I expected.

My reason for attending the course were twofold. First, I wanted to learn more about the topic. Secondly, I wanted to experiment where online course are suitable for me.

Results:

A) yes, I learned a lot (at least given the time I spent)

B) no, online courses are not for me. I rather read books and articles on my own, videos etc do not add value for me at all.

Given that I also attended Stanford's course on story telling and had similar experiences there, I think I will not attend and spend any more of my time and money on online course.

But in summary, this was a worthy experiment. I try to deduct the cost from my taxes....
